Female only? Bookstagram gender.

Updated: May 7, 2020

Is Bookstagram really run by women? That is the rumour on the street and if it is indeed true, why?

Most people seem to think that men don't read as much while other believe it is because social media is an emotional task and men are just too masculine for it.

The truth is that 90% of 47 interviewed sources, confirm that Bookstagram is mainly a female platform and that at least 70% of their audience is made up of women.

1.Men read less

Research shows that some people consider reading a "girly" thing and that this leads to men reading less than women on typical.

"I think it is because women are the ones that enjoy more reading time", said Catarina, a bookstagrammer.

Even if this argument shows truth, why would men read less than women? Well a lot of it has to do with emotions or even prejudice.

Based on the research survey conducted for the purpose of this article, opinions where express that society does not agree with men reading freely.

Statista: Men vs Women reading time. 2014

Since the most common genres between the interviewed sources being fantasy and romance, men would be looked upon by reading either those genres because:

  • Romance is seen as a feminine genre.

  • Fantasy is seen as a children genre.

There was an interesting theory was talked about on the survey, that emotions are what keeps men from reading as much as women.

"I just think that society has interpreted reading as a passionate hobby that requires intense emotions and imagination, neither of which society expects from men", said a source from the survey.

2.Men are less social

Instagram is a social platform so it maybe be that men are just not as social as women are.

"I find both genres equally attracted to social media just not in the same way. I come across Instagram accounts of men but they mostly involve sports, lifestyle, and fashion", said Ljubica, a bookstagrammer with 5K.

At least, two interviewed sources, said that they had almost no male friends that had Instagram accounts while others confirmed that if they knew of men having an Instagram account it was an inactive account.

The statistics say that 52% of all Instagram’s users ,in 2020, are women.

But with the same question in mind, there is some people that think that: "I find both genres equally attracted to social media just not in the same way", said Ljubica who is a bookstagrammer from Serbia.

Another factor that sprung curiosity would be that men are less creative and less into photography. Which may be a bit of stretch seeing as there is countless photography accounts by men in Instagram.

Marilou, another bookstagrammer that is really into photography, said: "Between straight and gay/bi men I have noticed that the latter are more into photography"

May the argument that bi/gay men that are generally above societal prejudice and more freely tuned into themselves be correct?

Let's just say that after speculation we can say the question is yet to be answer: Why is Bookstagram a female community? Maybe only men can answer it.
